Web Home Page: Anysberg Nature Reserve lies in part of the Anysberg Mountain Catchment Area, whose waters drain eventually into the Gouritz River system. Recently enlarged to more than 40 000 ha, the reserve consists mainly of mountains interspersed with wide, open valleys. Two major plant communities are present. Karoo scrub and bush on the lower northern and southern slopes, and montane fynbos (heath) higher up. Several plant species, including two rare ericas, are know to grow only in this mountain range. Mammals that occur in the reserve include baboon, leopard, caracal, klipspringer, grey rhebok, common duiker, Cape grysbok, spectacled dormouse and the Cape spiny mouse. A number of rare birds may be seen, including martial and booted eagles, Cape eagle owl and the protea canary, as well as the Cape sugerbird. Location: The Little Karoo; south-west of Lainsburg, 370 km from Cape Town. Access: From Lainsburg take the R323 south-eastwards towards Riversdale for approximately 60 km. The turnoff to the Anysberg Nature Reserve is on the right and is clearly signposted. Accommodation: Self-catering cottages with beds and cooking facilities, provide own bedding and utensils, a basic camping site with 6 stands and limited ablutions. Other facilities: An overnight trail is being developed; at present hikers may make arrangement with the Officer-in-charge to hike in the reserve; two-day accompanied horse trails are offered (book in advance).
